My major research interests are linked to water issues, in particular, on institutional change. I have focused on various institutional issues on water with special reference to China, South Korea, Europe and Southeast Asia. Particular topics are private sector participation/public-private partnerships in water supply and sewage treatment facilities, water governance reform – institutions (water law) and regulatory programs, integrated water resources management (IWRM), water conflicts between different regions, roles of civil society in water policy making (NGOs and other civil forces), and impacts of mega scale water transfer/engineering projects including the South North Water Transfer Project. Over the last few years, I have primarily paid attention to transboundary water issues with special reference to the Mekong River Basin, the Rhine and other international waterways.
