Promoting Risk Management Expertise in East Asia

The Department of International Studies aims to educate and train specialists in analyzing and evaluating international affairs, actively incorporating a variety of socio-political and economic perspectives. The current emphasis is on the following intellectual themes:

The Great East Japan Earthquake that occurred on March 11th, 2011 and the ensuing accident at the Fukushima nuclear power plant showed that natural disasters and nuclear risks have significant influence across borders. By the same token, currency crises or security risks in a country result in cross-border risks, thereby necessitating intra and inter-regional collaboration. However, experts on cross-border risk analysis and management are woefully lacking.

The objective of this project is to train graduate students to become ‘risk management experts’ who can deal with the global issues by establishing the cooperative framework among Fudan University in China, Korea University in South Korea, and Kobe University in Japan. This project also aims to cultivate the experts with advanced knowledge and skills in political, economic, and social issues in each country as well as at global context. The graduates also will be able to obtain skills with multidisciplinary background that can fit in international cooperation and development. The Program is supported by the Ministry of Education of each nation, Korea, Japan and China.

Through the implementation of the project, graduate students at the three universities will benefit, and most of them will obtain dual degrees relevant to risk analysis and management. In order to achieve the project objectives, the consortium will review the current curriculum to meet the demand of human resource requirements in risk analysis and management. This consortium will also expand the network to include other internship organizations.
